Fiji’s Flying Fijians Experiment with Squad Dynamics Ahead of Tonga Clash

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is experimenting with various combinations within his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) competition. In an interview, Byrne noted that the interactions between the forwards and backs are consistently improving.

“It’s a small squad, so 28 isn’t a big number,” he remarked. “We have our backs and a few on standby, allowing them to explore all combinations without needing to hold anyone back.”

Byrne acknowledged that he is uncertain about how the combinations will materialize later in the tournament, emphasizing that the process is ongoing. “We’re working through this, and every player is getting a chance. It’s not like we have several players idly sitting on the sidelines.”

He is aware of the challenges awaiting the team in Tonga next Friday. “It’s akin to facing Fiji at home, or Samoa at their place, or Tonga at home,” he said, emphasizing the passionate support for home teams in the Pacific Islands. “It’s going to create an intense atmosphere for us, and we need to stay focused on our objectives despite the external pressures.”

Looking ahead, Byrne expressed enthusiasm about the competitive environment, noting that it is similar to what Fiji faces when hosting visitors.

In other news, prop Ben Tameifuna will captain Tonga in their PNC opener against Samoa in Apia, a crucial match for both sides.
