Fiji’s Flying Fijians Experiment with Squad Combinations in PNC

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is experimenting with various combinations within his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC). In an interview, Byrne noted that the collaboration between forwards and backs is constantly evolving.

“It’s a small squad; 28 isn’t a large number,” he stated. “We have our backs, and we likely have one or two spare backs, allowing them to participate in all combinations without needing to hold any back.”

Byrne mentioned uncertainties regarding the combinations as the competition progresses, emphasizing that the process is ongoing. “We’re working through this, and everyone’s getting a chance. It’s not as if there are four or five players sidelined and not being utilized. Everyone is being included in such a limited squad.”

As for their upcoming challenge against Tonga next Friday, Byrne expressed awareness of what to expect. “Playing Fiji in Fiji, Samoa in Samoa, and Tonga in Tonga all have similar dynamics. We are familiar with the passion of the fans in the Pacific Islands. They are strongly supportive of their home teams.”

He acknowledged the anticipated pressure, stating the importance of maintaining focus on their objectives. “We have to ensure we understand what we want to accomplish, allowing us to remain focused despite outside distractions. We are looking forward to this challenge, just as others feel when they play against us.”

In related news, burly prop Ben Tameifuna will captain Tonga in their PNC opener against Samoa in Apia, a vital match for both teams.

This weekend’s matches include Samoa versus Tonga at 4 pm today, and on Sunday, the USA will face Canada at 1 pm.

In previous results, Fiji defeated Samoa 42-16, while Canada lost to Japan 28-55.
