Fiji’s Flying Fijians Experiment with Squad Combinations Ahead of Tonga Clash

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is exploring various combinations within his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC). Byrne shared insights with SUNsports, emphasizing the fluidity of partnerships between players in both the forward and back positions.

“It’s a small squad; 28 is not a huge number,” he noted. “We have our backs, and we likely have one or two extras, allowing us to try out all the combinations without overextending.”

Byrne acknowledged that while the optimal combinations may not be finalized for the later stages of the tournament, the process is ongoing. “We’re working through this, ensuring all players get their opportunities. It’s not like we have several players sitting on the sidelines unused.”

As they prepare for their upcoming match against Tonga, Byrne understands the intensity of playing away from home. “Playing Fiji in Fiji, Samoa in Samoa, and Tonga in Tonga presents a unique challenge. We’re aware of the passionate support for home teams in the Pacific Islands,” he remarked.

“It will be a significant test for us. Our focus needs to remain on our objectives, tuning out any external distractions,” he added. “We’re eagerly anticipating this match, just as we expect when teams come to play against us.”

In another development, the Tongan team will be led by formidable prop Ben Tameifuna in their PNC opener against Samoa in Apia, which is crucial for both teams.
