For dancer Evangeline Kumar, the path to an international stage is filled with both excitement and challenges. In a recent conversation with FBC News, Kumar expressed how significant this opportunity is for the dancers, extending her gratitude to the New Zealand High Commission and other supporters of the Fijian Flying Circus and local artists.

This backing has paved the way for a remarkable milestone, as the group is set to headline a festival in New Zealand. Kumar emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “Headlining is a big deal. We’re the only group dancing, not singing, so we really have to keep the audience engaged and prove we deserve to be there.” The task ahead is made even more demanding by their unique combination of dance and circus arts.

Kumar noted that the circus aspect entails high-flying acts and performing risky maneuvers, which can be both mentally and physically challenging, especially when confronting fears. Nevertheless, she believes that her performances have not only shaped her career but also made her a role model for her family, inspiring her nieces and nephews.

VOU Dance Group Director Sachiko Soro highlighted the success of the Fijian Flying Circus as indicative of a broader shift in how creative careers are perceived in Fiji. “These are full-time professional artists. This is not a hobby — it’s a profession,” she asserted. Soro acknowledged the support from the New Zealand High Commission as instrumental in opening new avenues and demonstrating that a sustainable path exists within the creative industry.

The Fijian Flying Circus is set to perform at the Wellington Fringe Festival before making history as the first non-musical performing arts group to take center stage at the Hamilton Arts Festival. Soro expressed their determination to deliver an outstanding performance in New Zealand, reflecting their dedication to their art and the aspirations of Fijian artistry on the global stage.
