The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in the towns of Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki due to increasing water levels from recent rainfall. Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that these actions are necessary to ensure public safety and to protect local infrastructure from potential damage and opportunistic behavior.
Currently, four evacuation centers in the Western Division are operational, providing shelter for 226 individuals, with more people anticipated to seek refuge if the heavy rains continue. Major transport routes are also affected, with the Ba to Rakiraki highway closed and Tavua Town becoming inaccessible.
In response to the situation, police are actively evacuating residents from areas at risk and are ready to monitor and respond to any further developments.
This situation highlights the importance of community preparedness and the swift action of local authorities in safeguarding lives during adverse weather conditions. As the situation evolves, it is hopeful that the affected communities will receive the necessary support and resources to recover quickly.
