As floodwaters in Fiji start to recede, the Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, especially in the Western Division, to take swift action to protect themselves against the potential rise in climate-sensitive diseases.
Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea are illnesses that often see an increase during this time. Ragigia Dawai, the Director-General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, has stated that while the immediate threat of flooding is decreasing, the likelihood of disease outbreaks remains a serious concern.
In the past three days, the Fiji Red Cross has evaluated 75 households and provided aid to over 295 individuals in need across both evacuation centers and local communities in the Western Division. The response teams in the area continue to monitor conditions closely and offer support as required.
This call to action highlights the importance of heightened awareness and preparation in the aftermath of natural disasters. By taking preventive measures, communities can safeguard their health and well-being.
As the situation develops, a unified effort and collaboration among residents can pave the way for a healthier recovery, serving as a reminder of the resilience and strength found in community action during challenging times.
