Fiji Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is relying on his team’s fitness for their upcoming Pacific Nations Cup semi-final against the United States Eagles on Saturday at Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.
Byrne emphasized that fitness has been a key strength for the players throughout their PNC campaign. He noted the team’s ability to perform well late in games and maintain constant pressure on their opponents.
“This week will present challenges for our defense,” Byrne explained, highlighting the need for physicality and effective tackling. He acknowledged the importance of being consistent in their preparations, despite training in different countries.
The coach stressed the necessity of playing disciplined rugby for the full 80 minutes. He pointed out that players need to focus on maintaining possession and avoiding risky offloads against the USA.
The overall atmosphere at the team camp is positive, with players in good shape. Byrne highlighted the contributions of young players Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula and Inia Tabuavou, praising Armstrong-Ravula’s strength in territorial battles and Tabuavou’s adaptation to the inside center position.
