Fiji’s Fitness Secret to Conquer USA in PNC Semi-Final

Fiji Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is relying on his team’s fitness as they prepare for their Pacific Nations Cup semi-final against the United States Eagles on Saturday night at the Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

Byrne expressed confidence in his players’ fitness levels, which he considers a key strength throughout their PNC campaign. He noted the team’s ability to maintain intensity late in the game and to consistently apply pressure on opponents.

“We’re focusing on progressing as a team and putting pressure on them, which presents a challenge,” Byrne said after the team’s arrival in Japan. He highlighted the hard work the players have put into their training and acknowledged the upcoming challenges, particularly in defense.

“This week will present several challenges, especially regarding our defense. We need to work on our line speed and make our tackles effectively,” he added. Despite some potential slips due to the new rules, Byrne emphasized the need for disciplined play for the full 80 minutes during the semi-final.

He pointed out that maintaining consistency in preparations is crucial, even while training across two different countries. He mentioned the importance of improving line speed in defense, as they will need to stay disciplined and retain possession against the USA, avoiding unnecessary risks with offloads.

The atmosphere within the team is positive, with all players in good condition. Byrne praised younger players Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula and Inia Tabuavou, noting Armstrong-Ravula’s strength in contesting territory and his skill in regaining possession after high kicks. He also remarked on Tabuavou’s smooth integration into the inside center position.
