Fiji Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is relying on his team’s fitness for their upcoming Pacific Nations Cup semi-final against the United States Eagles on Saturday night at the Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

Byrne highlighted the players’ fitness as a key strength during their Pacific Nations Cup campaign. He praised their capability to sustain performance late in the game and to apply consistent pressure on their opponents.

After arriving in Japan, he noted that the team has been rigorously training, facing new challenges in their defense as they prepare for a more physical match. He emphasized the importance of solid tackling and getting off the line effectively in order to maintain their defensive structure.

According to Byrne, the players must display discipline and focus throughout the full 80 minutes in the semi-final. He acknowledged the challenges of training across two different countries but stressed the need for consistent preparations.

Byrne pointed out the necessity for strong line speed in defense while highlighting the importance of retaining possession and avoiding risky 50/50 offloads against the USA. He remarked that the team’s mood is positive and everyone is in good physical condition.

He also praised young players Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula and Inia Tabuavou for their contributions to the team. Byrne noted Armstrong-Ravula’s strength in contested territory and his ability to chase and regain the ball from high kicks. He added that Tabuavou has adapted well to playing in the inside center position.
