The recent activation of the global sourcing derogation by the European Union (EU) marks a significant milestone for Fiji’s fish processing industry. This development, part of the Interim Economic Partnership Agreement (IEPA), allows Fiji to source raw fish from foreign-flagged vessels instead of being restricted to local fish. This flexibility will enable local fish processors to enhance their production capabilities and subsequently export value-added fishery products to the EU duty-free, thus expanding Fiji’s export market.

According to Fiji’s Ministry of Trade, this initiative is anticipated to create employment opportunities and stimulate growth within both the fisheries and manufacturing sectors. Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica expressed enthusiasm regarding this approval, linking it to the government’s ongoing strategic efforts to diversify Fiji’s exports and improve access to high-value markets. He emphasized that this step opens new pathways for investment and sustainable growth in these sectors.

Also, Permanent Secretary for Trade Shaheen Ali indicated that while the global sourcing for processed fish has been authorized, the ministry intends to engage further with the EU to broaden this arrangement to include fresh and frozen fish—a market where Fiji holds considerable potential. He conveyed optimism about future expansions of this agreement, which could yield mutual benefits and strengthen the fisheries partnership.

This initiative follows a formal request by the Fiji government to the EU, which was submitted in April 2025 along with comprehensive technical documentation and stakeholder consultations. The EU’s favorable decision is expected to significantly boost Fiji’s economic prospects, particularly for coastal communities dependent on fishing.

In summary, the activation of the global sourcing derogation not only enhances Fiji’s competitive edge in the seafood market but also reflects a broader commitment to sustainable practices in fisheries management, signifying a hopeful outlook for the country’s economic growth and enhanced trade relations with the EU.
