The government of Fiji has been called upon to address the declining supplies of albacore tuna to Levuka, a town heavily dependent on the fishing industry for its economy. Opposition MP Semi Koroilavesau emphasized that the Pacific Fishing Company (PAFCO) plays a critical role in providing employment and supporting the livelihoods of hundreds of women in the area.

In response to comments made by Fisheries Minister Alitia Bainivalu regarding improvements in the management of South Pacific albacore, Koroilavesau acknowledged the progress made in regional cooperation but stressed the urgency of addressing domestic challenges. He urged for an enhanced strategy to maximize albacore stocks available to Levuka, highlighting that without PAFCO, the local economy would suffer drastically.

The albacore tuna fishery is a vital component of Fiji’s economy, with species like albacore, yellowfin, and bigeye forming the backbone of the nation’s fishing industry. Koroilavesau noted the recent achievement of marine steward certification for Fiji’s albacore longline sector, praising it as a significant milestone in sustainable fishing practices.

He pointed out the importance of maintaining stable tuna stocks for the future of Levuka and the surrounding Lomaiviti region, asserting that a sustainable supply chain is essential for economic vitality. Koroilavesau urged continued exploration of alternative sources of tuna to support PAFCO’s operations and stabilize employment in the area.

Fiji has made commendable strides towards sustainable fisheries management, evidenced by previous agreements and significant investments aimed at ensuring the long-term health of tuna stocks and the communities through which they are maintained. This proactive approach could herald a brighter future for Fiji’s fishing sector and empower local economies while preserving marine resources.

In the context of the ongoing discussions around sustainable fishing and labor conditions, this new call to action highlights the need for continued efforts to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship, ensuring that communities reliant on fisheries can thrive into the future.
