Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and responsible fiscal management during the inaugural Post-Budget Stakeholders Engagement held at the Fiji Development Bank in Namaka, Nadi, on July 5, 2025.

Speaking to an audience of private sector representatives, civil society members, and the public, Minister Prasad described the 2025–2026 National Budget as a product of extensive consultations. He asserted that the budget is focused on a people-first approach, prioritizing essential sectors such as health, education, agriculture, infrastructure, and law enforcement. Additionally, he highlighted that Fiji’s debt-to-GDP ratio has significantly improved, dropping from 90% to around 77% within two years—an accomplishment that enhances public investment capabilities while maintaining fiscal discipline.

“We are not just managing numbers. We’re making space to stimulate the economy, improve service delivery, and invest in infrastructure, all while strengthening our economic fundamentals,” said Prasad. This commitment aligns with previously reported themes of transparency, inclusivity, and responsiveness to community needs observed in earlier budget consultations.

The ongoing dialogue reflects the growing public interest in fiscal matters, which is part of a broader trend towards more democratic governance in Fiji. The Minister expressed optimism about the engagement levels seen in recent budget consultations, which reveal a collective aspiration for a transparent and inclusive economic future.

The effective framework created by the budget consultations not only enhances service delivery but also fosters collaboration among the government, private sector, and communities. As Fiji aims to transition into a high-income economy within the next decade, this innovative approach seeks to transform fiscal dialogue into practical outcomes that support the nation’s resilience and progress.

These developments are hopeful signs for Fiji, indicating a shift toward a more engaged citizenry and government willingness to incorporate feedback into fiscal planning, ultimately benefiting the entire population.
