Several hotels and resorts have confirmed their participation in the upcoming Tourism Recycling Forum, which is being organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation and Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited. This inaugural event is scheduled for September 18, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi. It is being held in partnership with Tourism Fiji, Paradise Beverages Limited, and Tanoa Hotel Group.
The Forum represents a significant advancement for Fiji’s tourism industry, highlighting its crucial role in the national economy and commitment to environmental sustainability. The event will bring together resort and hotel operators from across the country, including Suva and Nadi, to discuss common recycling challenges and introduce a new program aimed at recovering used Paradise Beverage glass bottles from participating businesses.
Amitesh Deo, the Founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, expressed his excitement about the initiative. He noted that the Forum provides a unique chance for hotels and resorts to work together to improve recycling practices. He emphasized that effective recycling and waste management are essential for ensuring environmental sustainability.
Deo pointed out the growing significance of eco-friendly practices in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. He stated that modern travelers are increasingly conscious of their environmental footprint and prefer destinations that align with their values. This commitment to sustainability is now essential, and the Forum will help tourism partners implement best practices to demonstrate their dedication to environmental responsibility.
By engaging in this event, resorts and hotels will significantly contribute to enhancing recycling initiatives and promoting sustainable tourism practices. Their participation will not only meet global standards and attract environmentally conscious travelers but will also help in minimizing dependence on open dumpsites and landfills for disposing of waste generated by hotels and resorts.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, will officiate at this landmark event.
