The opening of Fiji’s inaugural green building has faced yet another delay due to recent injuries at the construction site. Fijian Holdings Limited (FHL) had planned to launch its flagship tower next month, but this timeline is now uncertain following a safety incident reported earlier this week.
On November 25, 2024, two workers suffered injuries at the FHL Tower construction site. While specific details regarding the incident have not been disclosed by FHL, sources indicate that the injured workers may have sustained flash burns. The tower, which stands at 17 storeys tall, has been under construction for six years, with progress affected by challenges such as the coronavirus pandemic.
Following the incident, FHL expressed its concern, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected and their families during this difficult period.” The company also emphasized its priority on safety, stating that the decision to delay the opening was made to uphold the highest standards of care and responsibility. FHL committed to working closely with the main contractor and authorities to ensure safety protocols are diligently followed.
FHL Tower represents a significant project for Fijian Holdings, a fully-indigenous owned organization, with previous capital raising efforts exceeding expectations in 2022. FHL has assured stakeholders that updates will be provided as more information comes to light.
Despite the setbacks, FHL’s commitment to safety and responsible construction practices reflects a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes the wellbeing of workers and the community. With continued focus on safety, there is hope that once construction resumes, the project will ultimately be successful and contribute positively to Fiji’s development.
