Fiji’s first female FICAC Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, has addressed concerns regarding her appointment by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, made upon the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission. Malimali firmly stated, “I am not a political appointee,” and emphasized that the JSC affirmed she was the best candidate for the position.
She expressed her discontent with claims labeling her as a political appointee, describing them as untrue and offensive. Malimali recognized that scrutiny is part of her new role, remarking, “If you can’t take the critics then don’t take the job.”
As she transitions into her responsibilities, Malimali is working to familiarize herself with FICAC’s structure and operations, noting the organization’s complexity and the number of personnel involved.
Her appointment has been met with significant criticism, especially following the concurrent resignation of former acting deputy commissioner Francis Puleiwai, leading to further questions from politicians.
