Senikavika Jiuta has made history as the first female Chief Executive Officer of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), following her recent appointment. This milestone reflects a significant step toward diversity and inclusion within the regulatory framework of Fiji.

Cecil Browne, the FCCC Board Chairman, praised Jiuta’s extensive experience in regulatory roles and her commitment to consumer rights, which he believes will guide the Commission toward its future goals. “Ms Jiuta’s leadership underlines our commitment to transparency and fairness in Fiji’s markets,” Browne stated, highlighting her legal acumen and strategic clarity as valuable assets for the organization.

In her new role, Jiuta revealed her deep personal connection to the FCCC and expressed enthusiasm for ensuring that fair competition and robust consumer protections remain at the forefront of the Commission’s initiatives. She acknowledged the emerging challenges, such as the rise of scams and unfair practices in the digital space, that necessitate a proactive approach from the FCCC. “My goal will be to uphold the highest standards of consumer protection while fostering a competitive market that aligns with Fiji’s economic needs,” she asserted.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, noted that Jiuta’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment in Fiji’s regulatory landscape, indicating her role is fundamental to driving consumer protections amidst evolving market challenges. He emphasized that her expertise will be crucial in navigating the current economic climate, particularly in light of the rising living costs that citizens face today.

The focus of Jiuta’s leadership will not only be on enhancing consumer rights but also on advancing sustainable economic practices that serve all Fijians. The Commission intends to adopt international best practices while addressing the unique needs of the Fijian population.

The appointment of Jiuta is met with optimism, suggesting that her leadership could inspire meaningful advancements in consumer advocacy and encourage a fair market landscape in Fiji. This shift heralds potential growth and improvements in the regulatory practices that are vital for protecting consumer interests and fostering economic development across the nation.

As the FCCC embarks on this new chapter under Jiuta’s guidance, there is a renewed hope for a marketplace that prioritizes fairness, transparency, and the needs of consumers.
