Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad criticized Unity Fiji Leader Savenaca Narube’s recent call for Australia to reassess its budget support for Fiji, labeling it an attempt to undermine the country’s economic stability. Prasad denounced Narube’s allegations of mismanagement by the Coalition Government as unfounded and exaggerated.

In response to Narube’s comments made during the Climate Integrity Conference 2025 in Canberra, Prasad emphasized the legitimacy and accountability of the expenditures associated with Fiji’s participation in international climate negotiations, specifically at COP29. He clarified that the size of the Fiji delegation has been exaggerated, asserting that only a small portion of the total funding was provided by the Fijian government, with the bulk funded by external sources.

Prasad remarked that Narube’s inexperience in climate conferences disqualifies him from making informed statements about the delegation’s purpose and effectiveness. He recalled that previously, under the former administration, a far larger delegation was sent to COP 23 without significant objection from Narube.

He further reiterated Fiji’s gratitude towards Australia as a crucial development partner, supporting various initiatives in public health and education. Recognizing the economic and social assistance provided by Australia, Prasad argued that criticism from Narube could be viewed as an insult to the Australian taxpayers whose contributions support vital programs in Fiji.

This public dispute reflects ongoing tensions in Fijian politics concerning climate negotiations and economic management. It also raises important questions about the governance and proper allocation of resources in addressing climate-related challenges.

The controversy could serve as an impetus for the government to reinforce its strategies regarding international cooperation and improve transparency surrounding the utilization of donor funds. Engaging openly with critics may help build a more robust and effective approach to climate advocacy that prioritizes communities most affected by environmental issues, ultimately strengthening Fiji’s stance on the global platform.
