Fiji is set to enhance its economy by nurturing a robust audio-visual industry, which will positively influence multiple sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and local service providers. This was emphasized by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica at the Film Fiji Industry Connect event held in Suva.
During his speech, Kamikamica pointed out the substantial contributions the film industry has made to Fiji’s economy. In the previous financial year, the nation played host to films, television series, and documentaries from 11 countries, which collectively generated nearly $260 million in economic activity. These productions have provided jobs for around 1,300 Fijians and engaged 282 local service providers, demonstrating the significant economic impact of the audio-visual sector.
Kamikamica expressed that Fiji aims to attract more international productions, similar to the success of shows like Love Island, while also supporting local filmmakers. He reiterated the government’s recognition of the audio-visual industry’s transformative potential and its commitment to fostering an environment conducive to growth. Initiatives such as collaboration with the Immigration Department on work permit automation reflect this dedication. The Fijian government’s ongoing support aims to empower local filmmakers to develop their craft and realize their potential.
