Fiji’s Film Industry Takes Center Stage: A New Era Begins

The growth of the Audio-Visual and Film industry is a key focus in Fiji’s new National Development Plan. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized this during the premiere of the locally produced film “Langha Phobia,” which revolves around themes of trust and respect in marriage, held at Life Cinema in Nakasi.

Professor Prasad noted the significant potential for the Audio-Visual and Film sector in Fiji, which is increasingly recognized as an essential industry. He highlighted Fiji’s appeal as a favored location for film production, attributed to its picturesque islands, rich marine life, and vibrant culture and heritage.

Another major goal of the Coalition Government, according to Professor Prasad, is to enhance local talent through education and training. He stated that the Government is providing considerable support to local universities to foster talent and develop skills in the arts through a range of programs and courses.

The new National Development Plan, described as “The People’s Plan,” aims to reflect the aspirations of the community and enhance their socio-economic well-being. Professor Prasad reiterated the importance of creating a supportive environment for Fijian filmmakers to refine their skills, which would further promote the growth of the film industry.

He remarked on the universal nature of films, which bridge cultural and social divides, connecting individuals regardless of nationality, age, or economic status. Movies, as a form of contemporary art, serve to break barriers and convey shared values and emotions, making them a powerful storytelling medium.

In his remarks, Professor Prasad recognized the director, producer, and the entire cast and crew for their dedication and hard work in bringing the film to fruition. He specifically praised Mr. Vimal Reddy for consistently incorporating authentic Fijian elements into his films, which convey strong social messages that resonate with local audiences and challenge societal barriers.
