Fiji’s Film Industry Set to Shine: A New Era of Talent and Innovation

The audio-visual and film sector has been prioritized in Fiji’s new National Development Plan, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad. He made this announcement during the premiere of the locally shot movie “Langha Phobia,” which explores the themes of trust and respect in marriage, at Life Cinema in Nakasi.

Professor Prasad emphasized the significant growth potential of Fiji’s audio-visual and film industry, highlighting its emerging role as a key economic sector. He noted that Fiji is becoming a sought-after location for film production, thanks to its stunning islands, diverse marine life, rich culture, and heritage.

One of the key focuses of the Coalition Government is to cultivate local talent through education and training. The government has been actively supporting local universities to foster arts and skills development, offering various programs and courses.

The new National Development Plan, described as “The People’s Plan,” aims to reflect the aspirations of the Fijian people and enhance their socio-economic well-being. Professor Prasad reiterated the importance of creating a supportive environment for Fijian filmmakers, which will encourage the growth of the local film industry.

He explained that films serve as a universal medium that connects people across various demographics, breaking barriers and highlighting shared values and emotions. Professor Prasad also commended the director, producer, and entire cast and crew for their dedication and hard work in bringing the film to fruition.

Notably, he praised director Vimal Reddy for consistently infusing an authentic Fijian essence into his films, which carry powerful social messages that resonate deeply with local audiences and challenge societal norms.
