The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has unveiled exciting initiatives aimed at elevating women’s rugby, targeted for implementation starting January next year. These developments are set to enhance the Fijiana teams’ trajectory as they prepare for the next Women’s Rugby World Cup cycle.
Initiatives began in October with discussions focused on securing more competitive fixtures for the national women’s 15s team. John Sanday, the FRU Board chairman, expressed optimism, indicating that negotiations with the Head of High-Performance Unit at World Rugby have yielded positive results. Sanday noted that a minimum of six high-quality matches for the Fijiana team is anticipated for next year.
The team’s recent performances in prior Rugby World Cups have garnered attention, with World Rugby acknowledging the efforts put forth by Fijian women in the sport. Sanday highlighted the overall success of the latest Women’s Rugby World Cup, stating it bodes well for the future of women’s rugby.
With a commitment to investing in women’s rugby, the FRU aims to position the Fijiana as formidable contenders at the Women’s Rugby World Cup scheduled for Australia in 2029. Furthermore, Sanday emphasized that the FRU’s yearly 7s programs for both women and men will continue, serving as a vital pathway for players aspiring to join national teams.
These ambitious plans signal a bright future for women’s rugby in Fiji, offering greater opportunities and growing recognition in the sport. The strategic investments and expanded competition opportunities are likely to bolster the Fijiana’s prospects on the global stage.
