Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has taken a strong position in defending Fiji’s significant contributions to global peacekeeping and conflict resolution. He emphasized that Fiji has rightly earned its status among the global community, countering recent remarks from the President that referred to the nation as a “beggar.” Rabuka stated that such comments are unjust and overlook Fiji’s historical and ongoing involvement in international conflicts and humanitarian endeavors.

Despite being classified as a Small Developing Economy, Rabuka highlighted that Fiji has made notable contributions during the world wars and continues to play an active role in United Nations peacekeeping missions. He expressed pride in Fiji’s resilience, asserting that the country should not be viewed merely as reliant on foreign aid.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the socio-economic challenges faced by Fiji but delivered a hopeful message outlining potential pathways for transformation. He expressed optimism that the government would implement strategies to stimulate investment, promote sustainable industries, and enhance trade opportunities, particularly in agriculture, tourism, and digital sectors. Furthermore, there is a commitment to develop infrastructure that supports productivity and attracts foreign investment while also protecting local industries.

Rabuka underlined that national progress should be measured not solely by economic success but also by the well-being of its citizens. He is dedicated to strengthening social protection programs to ensure that vulnerable groups, including the elderly and low-income families, have access to essential services and support.

His vision focuses on resilience and community collaboration, advocating for unity in overcoming challenges and striving for a prosperous future. As debates continue in Parliament, the hope is that cooperative efforts will yield actionable plans, setting the stage for a brighter future for all Fijians.
