Fiji’s Acting Chief Executive of the Rainbow Pride Foundation, Asaeli Sinusetaki, recently acknowledged the complex path of advocating for LGBTQI rights in Fiji during the observance of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia. Sinusetaki emphasized that, while there have been advancements in the acceptance of LGBTQI individuals, significant societal resistance persists. He stressed the importance of visibility and open dialogue in overcoming these challenges, stating, “We can’t do anything about that, except to keep talking, and except to keep speaking up… we’re all created in God’s eyes, and we’re all here as equals.”

RPF Youth President Zahif Mohammed echoed these sentiments, stating that events like IDAHOT aim to create a safe space for marginalized individuals to share their experiences and empower one another. The event promotes solidarity among diverse groups within the community, making it evident that the LGBTQIA+ community in Fiji, though marginalized, strives for recognition and acceptance.

This rallying for visibility and the fight for equality connect closely to prior calls from human rights advocates in Fiji, notably from the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, which has highlighted ongoing discrimination and the necessity for robust protections for marginalized communities. The Commission’s Director, Loukinikini Lewaravu, has previously urged for systemic changes to uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals, underscoring a collaborative effort required from all sectors of society to drive meaningful change.

Overall, LGBTQI advocates in Fiji are showing unwavering commitment, making their voices heard in the quest for equality. Their resilience and determination not only contribute to the broader fight for human rights but also inspire hope for a more inclusive future for all communities in Fiji. Celebrating diversity and fostering an environment of mutual respect remain key to building a society where everyone can thrive without fear or discrimination.
