Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has directed the Fiji Police Force to enhance patrols in the Robertson Road community in Suva, following the emergence of concerning videos showing youths engaging in drug-related activities. During a visit to the area, Rabuka learned from residents that issues such as public drinking, marijuana use, and suspected drug injection have been ongoing, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
The Prime Minister described the situation as severe, stating that no community should endure such dangerous and illegal behaviors, particularly among its youth. He emphasized that this problem extends beyond law enforcement issues, encompassing public health, safety, and the future of young people in Fiji. Rabuka called for collective efforts from the community, urging everyone to work together to safeguard children and restore a sense of safety and security.
This situation aligns with previous warnings Rabuka made about drug proliferation in Fiji, indicating a worrying trend in areas frequented by minors. The local police had already intensified their monitoring of hotspots associated with drug use, particularly after police found evidence of narcotics around festival venues. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has echoed concerns about the presence of methamphetamine and syringes in public spaces, highlighting the need for greater community involvement and vigilance.
The recent developments highlight a critical moment for communities in Fiji to rally together against the growing drug crisis. With the Prime Minister’s call for action, there is hope that increased police presence and community awareness can lead to a safer environment for the youth and help foster a healthier future.
