Fiji has seen a troubling rise in scabies prevalence, as highlighted by the National Scabies Program coordinator, Mela Liku. During the World Skin Health Day celebrations at Twomey Hospital in Suva, she noted that a national survey from 2007 indicated that 23% of the Fijian population was affected by scabies at any given time, with a staggering 45% of children aged five to nine years impacted.
A more recent prevalence survey, conducted in 2021 and 2022 by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services with the support of the World Scabies Program, revealed that while national prevalence was lower than anticipated, significant rates persisted among vulnerable populations. This led to the implementation of a Mass Drug Administration (MDA), which proved effective in lowering the national scabies prevalence to just 3.5%, with an even more significant reduction in moderate to severe cases, especially among children under 10.
This latest effort builds on previous discussions regarding neglected tropical diseases in Fiji, a concern raised by healthcare leaders like Acting Medical Superintendent Dr. Emosi Bainivalu. The rise of scabies and other ailments has been linked to factors such as environmental conditions, public awareness, and healthcare access. Dr. Bainivalu emphasized the importance of integrating education and health surveillance into the community to combat these pressing health issues.
The collaborative efforts of various health authorities and international organizations reflect a positive commitment toward fostering healthier living environments and improving health education. Through initiatives around skin health, Fiji is making strides in addressing public health challenges and reducing the stigma associated with skin diseases.
Hope remains as health officials continue to enhance awareness and accessibility to treatments within communities, empowering individuals to take control of their skin health. As Fiji progresses in these initiatives, the collective action toward improved health outcomes serves as a promising sign for the future.
