Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has committed to combating poverty in Fiji, declaring it a formidable adversary that wears many disguises, from low GDP to institutional weaknesses. During his address to Parliament regarding the 2025-2026 National Budget, he affirmed that poverty threatens livelihoods, dignity, and sovereignty, and is a challenge for the nation to confront head-on.

Rabuka expressed that the Coalition Government’s budget reflects a dedication to fighting poverty and is aligned with the National Development Plan 2025-2029 (Vision 2050). He emphasized the need for unity and empowerment among all Fijians as the country moves forward.

The Prime Minister provided a stark overview of the economy inherited by his government, characterizing it as one overshadowed by debt distress and marked by weakened institutions and inefficient practices within the civil service. He criticized previous leadership for creating inequality and eroding public trust and opportunities.

The path forward, according to Rabuka, involves reducing poverty while promoting inclusive growth across all sectors. He challenged the narrative that the iTaukei community—often portrayed as resource-rich but economically impoverished—should accept a lesser status. He cited impressive financial figures of the community, mentioning that $100 million flows annually from iTaukei Land Trust Board leases and royalties, alongside $1.07 billion from remittances. This indicates a significant economic potential that can be harnessed for development.

Moreover, Rabuka stressed that systemic reforms are required within legal and administrative frameworks to better facilitate progress and development. Addressing challenges like economic inequality remains a top priority for the Coalition Government as it aims to empower all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.

Reflections from similar past articles indicate a consistent theme of sustainable poverty alleviation through empowerment rather than handouts, as emphasized in Rabuka’s earlier New Year’s Day address. His overarching message resonates with hope for a future where all Fijians can lead dignified lives through strategic development and innovative economic participation.

This positive narrative reinforces the potential for transformative change in Fiji, inviting collective action to uplift communities and foster resilience against poverty. By focusing on empowerment and inclusivity, there lies a hopeful path toward a more prosperous future for all citizens.
