The Online Safety Commission (OSC) of Fiji has clarified that it lacks the legal authority to ban TikTok, emphasizing that any restriction on the platform would necessitate approval from Parliament and engagement with the national community. Commissioner Filipe Batiwale acknowledged the emergence of troubling content on TikTok aimed specifically at young Fijian women, including videos promoting harmful behaviors, such as the application of toothpaste to sensitive areas.

In response to public outcry regarding this explicit content, the OSC’s Online Abuse Response Team took swift action, managing to remove the videos within an hour of a formal complaint filed through their online reporting system. Batiwale noted that while the OSC is dedicated to facilitating resolution and promoting digital safety, it does not possess criminal enforcement powers; such cases are redirected to the Fiji Police Force and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Furthermore, the OSC is actively collaborating with police on serious offenses, including the distribution of sexually explicit content. The Commission is also advocating for stricter moderation practices and localized content guidelines to enhance digital safety measures consistent with Fiji’s legal standards.

In a proactive move to combat digital risks, particularly among vulnerable demographics like youth and women, the OSC is expanding its digital literacy campaigns. Batiwale stated that community and school-based programs play a pivotal role in empowering young people to identify and steer clear of dangerous online content.

The ongoing emphasis on enhancing online safety underscores a collective commitment to protecting Fiji’s digital landscape. Initiatives aimed at educating the public about responsible online behaviors and encouraging reporting of abuse reflect a hopeful outlook for fostering a safer digital environment.

With the challenges of online harm on the rise, the OSC’s commitment to reform and collaboration indicates a promising path forward in creating a more secure online experience for all Fijians.
