In Fiji, approximately one hundred individuals are affected by hemophilia, a genetic condition that inhibits proper blood clotting. The significant information was shared by Penioni Ravunawa, the Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, during an event hosted by the Fiji Haemophilia Foundation at Nadi Hospital.
Mr. Ravunawa noted the current struggles with diagnosing hemophilia in Fiji, mentioning that test samples often need to be sent overseas for confirmation, which leads to delays in both diagnosis and treatment. The lack of immediate access to accurate testing poses a challenge for patients who experience symptoms, particularly those with hemophilia A, who face prolonged bleeding from minor injuries or internal bleeding into joints and muscles.
The ministry is actively pursuing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Fiji Haemophilia Foundation to enhance diagnostic processes and awareness initiatives. It’s vital for individuals with a potential family history of hemophilia to consult healthcare professionals regarding available testing options. As emphasized by Mr. Ravunawa, early intervention and awareness can have a significant impact on health outcomes for those affected by this condition.
Previous reports indicated that diagnosing hemophilia in Fiji also suffers from underreporting, with at least 47 diagnosed cases identified. Only a fraction of affected individuals are registered with healthcare services, which signals an urgent need for improved access and awareness related to the condition. Among various strategies to address this issue, enhancing local testing capabilities and training healthcare providers on relevant emergency procedures are critical steps in ensuring better treatment outcomes.
As World Hemophilia Day approached, Mr. Ravunawa reiterated the importance of collaboration among community and health stakeholders to increase awareness, improve diagnostic processes, and enhance the quality of life for those living with hemophilia in Fiji. This concerted effort brings a hopeful prospect for better healthcare accessibility and support for affected individuals, promoting proactive health-seeking behaviors within the community.
