The National Conference organized by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Fiji focused on emerging criminal trends, commencing at the Shangri-La Yanuca Island Resort this morning. The event, which will last for two days, was inaugurated by Evan Robbins, the Program Director of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs from the US State Department. Approximately 150 attendees, including prosecutors, defense counsels, private legal practitioners, police officers, and investigators, are participating.
Keynote speakers from both local and international backgrounds are scheduled to present on various critical topics under the theme “Fiji on the Cusp of Emerging Trends: Narcotics, Age of Criminal Responsibility, International Cooperation, AI, Cyber Security, and Mental Health.”
During the opening, Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms. Nancy Tikoisuva, emphasized the relevance of the conference theme. She acknowledged that although the subjects may initially seem disparate, they are deeply interconnected. Ms. Tikoisuva highlighted the pervasive impact of drug-related issues on families, communities, and overall national wellbeing, noting that children are particularly vulnerable. She stressed the changing landscape of criminal activity, the pressing importance of understanding these trends, and the necessity of a collective response involving international cooperation and collaboration among various sectors.
