Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu has urged Fijians to abandon the “bystander” mindset regarding the escalating issue of illicit drugs in the country. Speaking at the unveiling of the ministry’s strategic plan for 2025-2030 in Sabeto, Nadi, he called on the community to actively participate in combating rising crime levels and social challenges, particularly among iTaukei youth.
Mr. Vasu highlighted a concerning correlation between the surge in drug abuse and the increase in HIV cases in Fiji. He stressed the necessity for village leaders to engage in educating their communities about the dangers of HIV/AIDS, particularly in relation to drug use. He described the rising use of injectable drugs as a significant threat specifically within iTaukei communities and called for a collective effort to distance society from the illicit drug trade.
In addition to drug-related issues, the minister addressed the alarming rates of violence within households, including physical and sexual assaults. He mentioned that many troubling incidents of domestic violence are occurring within families. By highlighting these concerns, Mr. Vasu emphasized the need for vigilance and intervention from community members to address and prevent violence, especially against women and children.
Another pressing issue he raised was the alarming consumption of pornography in Fiji, noting that it’s contributing to the cycle of sexual violence and assault. He confirmed that measures are being discussed to limit and potentially ban pornography to protect the nation’s social fabric.
Alongside these social concerns, Mr. Vasu touched on the educational challenges faced by iTaukei communities, urging families to prioritize education and support their children’s academic pursuits. He emphasized that families must actively encourage educational success to combat rising school dropout rates, reaffirming the government’s commitment to provide educational grants and assistance.
The call to action from Minister Vasu underscores a hopeful message that by strengthening family structures, enhancing community engagement, and fostering an environment of support, Fiji can make significant strides in combating drug abuse and its related social issues. This holistic approach not only addresses the immediate concerns but also sets the foundation for a healthier, more resilient future for the younger generation in Fiji.
