Fiji’s Fight Against Drug Culture: A Community Call to Action

Fiji’s Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua, has underscored the critical need to combat marijuana cultivation before it becomes entrenched in the culture of certain communities, particularly on Kadavu Islands where illicit farming persists despite police raids. Naivalurua emphasizes that the situation is concerning, as ongoing cultivation challenges efforts to maintain community standards.

In response, the Fiji Police Force is expanding its approach to include not just eradication efforts but also community awareness programs aimed at discouraging marijuana cultivation. “What we are trying to avoid is that it doesn’t become the new norm, embedded into our lifestyle, and accepted by the community,” Naivalurua stated.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts already in place by law enforcement, which have shown positive outcomes in related operations throughout Fiji. Recent raids executed in areas such as the Malua range of Navosa have resulted in significant seizures of marijuana plants, with over 2,700 confiscated in recent operations. These actions have not only aimed to disrupt illicit drug supply chains but also foster a cooperative spirit within communities to tackle the issue together.

The Minister’s comments reflect a growing acknowledgment of the urgency of the drug problem in Fiji, echoing sentiments expressed by other officials, such as Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua, who have advocated for community-wide involvement in combating drug-related issues.
