In an effort to combat the escalating problem of drug abuse in Fiji, Lifeline Fiji is enhancing its support services for individuals grappling with addiction. The organization is setting up group supervision and therapy programs designed to create a structured and supportive environment for those affected by substance abuse.

Under the leadership of Chief Executive Jeremaia Merekula, Lifeline Fiji aims to integrate the experiences of individuals who have successfully overcome addiction into their initiatives, thereby fostering a sense of community and mutual support. Merekula has highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the impact of drugs on mental health in local communities and is considering group therapies focused on drug rehabilitation, particularly in the Suva-Nausori area.

Lifeline Fiji emphasizes the necessity of providing strong backup support for its counselors. This includes regular monthly group supervision sessions with Lifeline Australia to ensure that counselors receive ongoing support and care in their roles.

In the context of Fiji’s drug crisis, this movement by Lifeline Fiji aligns with broader initiatives also highlighted by community leaders and government officials. Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua is advocating for the establishment of additional rehabilitation centers to address the pressing needs related to substance abuse, especially given the alarming rise in methamphetamine use.

Efforts to establish rehab centers, raise community awareness, and support individuals on the path to recovery hold promise in countering the ongoing drug-related challenges. With a united front from both governmental and civil society perspectives, there is hope that these initiatives will guide Fiji toward a healthier future, supporting not just those in recovery, but also fostering healthier communities overall.

The focus on rehabilitation programs, the engagement of individuals with lived experiences, and a strong support system represents a significant step forward in addressing the urgent issue of drug addiction in Fiji, showcasing that collaborative efforts can lead to positive change in the lives of many.
