As Fiji observes International Anti-Corruption Day, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, reaffirms the agency’s commitment to tackling corruption as mandated by law. She emphasizes that FICAC’s mission is dedicated to protecting Fijians from corrupt practices through thorough investigations, prosecutions, and vital public education initiatives.
Malimali underscores the harmful effects of corruption, noting that it erodes democratic institutions and diminishes public trust in governance. She identifies corruption as a destructive force that adversely affects the very fabric of society. The work of FICAC is crucial in promoting good governance principles, including transparency and accountability, which are fundamental to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
In her address, Malimali has encouraged the community and stakeholders to collaborate with FICAC by reporting any suspicious activities related to corruption. “We plead with the people and our stakeholders to work with us and report any corruption-related activity to FICAC,” she stated.
This year, the theme for International Anti-Corruption Day is “Support FICAC to fight corruption, promote transparency, and uphold integrity in Government and Society,” highlighting the collective effort required to combat corruption.
Overall, this initiative signifies a hopeful step towards fostering a more transparent and accountable society in Fiji. By rallying together to address corruption, citizens can contribute to building a stronger economic and political framework that benefits everyone.
