As Fiji observes International Anti-Corruption Day, Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to its mandate as defined by law. Malimali emphasized the importance of protecting Fijians from corruption through diligent investigation, prosecution, and public education.

She highlighted the detrimental effects of corruption, stating that it can erode democratic institutions and diminish public trust in governance. Corruption serves as a pervasive issue, akin to a parasite that undermines the integrity of societal systems. In light of this, FICAC’s role is crucial in promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability, which aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Additionally, Malimali urged the public and stakeholders to join the fight against corruption by reporting any related activities to FICAC. The theme for this year’s observance is “Support FICAC to fight corruption, promote transparency, and uphold integrity in Government and Society,” emphasizing the collective effort needed to combat this issue.

This initiative serves as a call to action for all Fijians to participate actively in fostering a culture of integrity and accountability, ultimately leading to a stronger, more democratic society. By promoting awareness and encouraging community involvement, Fiji takes significant steps in the battle against corruption.
