As Fiji observes International Anti-Corruption Day, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to its mandate as outlined in the relevant legislation. She emphasized that FICAC will persist in its efforts to protect Fijians from corruption through thorough investigations, prosecutions, and essential public education.
Malimali pointed out that corruption poses a significant threat to democratic institutions and erodes public trust in governance. She described corruption as a pervasive issue that adversely affects societal systems.
FICAC is integral in promoting the ideals of good governance, transparency, and accountability, which aligns closely with the Sustainable Development Goals. Malimali has also called upon the public and stakeholders to actively participate in the campaign against corruption by reporting any suspicious activities to FICAC.
The theme for this year’s International Anti-Corruption Day encourages collaboration: “Support FICAC to fight corruption, promote transparency, and uphold integrity in Government and Society.”
This initiative highlights the importance of community involvement in the fight against corruption, fostering a sense of collective responsibility among citizens and institutions. With continued dedication and support, Fiji can work towards a more transparent and accountable governance framework, ultimately benefiting all its citizens.
