A new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will assume office this afternoon, as confirmed by Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai. While details about the new Commissioner’s identity and responsibilities have not yet been officially released, Puleiwai reported that she has been informed about the transition.
According to section 5(1) of the FICAC Act 2007, the Commissioner is appointed by the President based on recommendations from the Judicial Services Commission, which must consult with the Attorney-General prior to making a recommendation.
In related news, FICAC has confirmed that they conducted a raid at the Election Commission yesterday, during which documents connected to an investigation involving Chairperson Barbara Malimali were seized. Malimali is currently facing allegations of abuse of office.
