Fiji’s FICAC Welcomes New Commissioner Amid Controversy

A new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is set to assume office this afternoon. This was confirmed by Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai, who noted that she has been informed about the transition, although the specifics regarding the new Commissioner’s identity and responsibilities have not yet been officially revealed.

According to section 5(1) of the FICAC Act 2007, the Commissioner is appointed by the President based on the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission, which must consult with the Attorney-General before making its decision.

In addition, FICAC has reported that a raid was conducted at the Election Commission yesterday, during which documents linked to the investigation of Chairperson Barbara Malimali were confiscated. Malimali is currently under scrutiny for allegations of abuse of office.
