The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has introduced a proactive strategic plan aimed at curbing corruption from 2025 to 2030. This plan, according to Acting Commissioner Lavi Rokoika, represents a significant shift from previous strategies that were criticized for their inefficiencies. The newly crafted plan comprises 25 specific goals that focus on measurable outcomes to directly tackle corruption and improve public trust in governmental processes.

Rokoika emphasized that previous efforts were incomplete, as they lacked tangible results. Key questions that remained unanswered included whether the efforts reduced corruption, if justice was served more swiftly, and whether public funds were adequately protected. The new plan is set to streamline operations, focusing on completing cases promptly, increasing successful prosecutions, recovering misappropriated assets, and preventing corruption at its roots.

Performance targets under this initiative have been clearly defined. They include clearing 75% of investigation backlogs, vetting complaints within 48 hours, boosting convictions by 85%, and ensuring detailed tracking of government expenditure. These metrics are designed to ensure that FICAC’s activities are not only transparent but also effective in their execution.

The reforms are part of broader changes introduced since Rokoika took office, further highlighting FICAC’s commitment to transformation and accountability. Aligning with previous initiatives mentioned in similar articles, the establishment of a Special Taskforce to tackle old cases and the appointment of experienced consultants have been part of FICAC’s comprehensive approach to reform its operations.

Despite the challenges faced by FICAC under former leadership, including public criticism and scrutiny, the Commission has remained resolute in its mandate to tackle corruption. By shifting to intelligence-led investigations and solidifying local and international partnerships, Rokoika aims to enhance FICAC’s effectiveness and foster a greater sense of trust among the public.

The restructured plans and ongoing commitment to combating corruption point towards a brighter future for Fiji, fostering an environment of accountability and integrity. With earnest efforts to embody transparency and collaboration, FICAC is set to play a pivotal role in fortifying Fiji’s governance by actively engaging citizens and reinforcing ethical behavior across all sectors.
