Fiji’s FICAC Under Scrutiny: What Changes Are Coming?

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is currently undergoing a review that aims to address its operational mechanisms and the challenges encountered by law enforcement agencies. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced this initiative, emphasizing that it is part of The People’s Alliance party manifesto.

“It is being reviewed right now,” Mr. Rabuka stated, reiterating its significance in the party’s commitments. He added that the review focuses on the operational aspects and the issues faced by law enforcement, particularly those involved in investigations.

The Prime Minister also reassured voters that a review of the 2013 Constitution would take place in line with its stipulated procedures. “That is part of the manifesto and it’s a very straightforward motion,” he confirmed, reminding the party of their promises to the electorate.

Mr. Rabuka mentioned that expert legal advice would be sought to ensure the review of the Constitution is conducted within the bounds of the law. He made it clear that the Government plans to engage with the public to gather their opinions on the constitutional review, either through a referendum or by inviting submissions.

“We still have the session later in the year when we can come back and do some parliamentary work on it,” he added.
