The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging traders to refrain from exploiting the festive season for profit. FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham stressed the importance of fair trading practices during this time, emphasizing that the organization will take strong action against any instances of price gouging, misleading promotions, or other forms of unfair conduct.
In preparation for the Christmas season, the FCCC has been proactive, conducting over 700 inspections in November alone to deter unethical practices. This vigilance led to the identification of 44 potential breaches of conduct, which included issues like overcharging and failure to clearly display prices or comply with duty and VAT reductions. Abraham made it clear that violations will be addressed through warnings, surveillance, or prosecution, depending on the severity of the offense.
