The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is ramping up its surveillance and inspections at major ports and jetties during the festive season. In partnership with various agencies, MSAF will conduct regular checks to ensure that vessel operators are adhering to safety regulations.
These regulations encompass the certification of boat captains, the safety conditions of vessels, and the allowable number of passengers onboard. MSAF’s Chief Executive Officer, Joweli Cawaki, emphasized their commitment to addressing any non-compliance or unsafe operations swiftly.
Cawaki stated, “We are dedicated to maintaining the safety of Fiji’s maritime environment, particularly during this busy and potentially dangerous season.” He noted that through increased monitoring and collaboration, they aim to ensure that all individuals have a safe and enjoyable holiday period.
As the festive season coincides with the cyclone season, MSAF advises boat operators, passengers, and the general public to prioritize safety and comply with maritime regulations when traveling to outer islands. Commander Cawaki underlined the importance of caution during this time, reminding everyone to check weather forecasts and be prepared to modify their plans as needed.
Given the impending Christmas and New Year celebrations, MSAF highlighted the necessity of thorough trip planning. Operators and passengers should be ready for any unanticipated weather changes and are encouraged to take appropriate precautions for their safety.
MSAF plays a crucial role in promoting safety, but they also call upon the public to assist by reporting any concerns or unsafe practices regarding vessels.
Cawaki concluded, “While we all look forward to a joyful holiday season, it is crucial that we remain vigilant and responsible in our maritime activities. The safety of our families and communities relies on our collective efforts.”
This proactive approach by MSAF not only underscores their commitment to safety but also fosters a sense of community responsibility among Fijians, encouraging everyone to participate in preserving maritime safety during this critical time. By working together, they can ensure a safer and more enjoyable holiday experience for all.
