The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging traders to avoid exploiting the festive season for profit. According to FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham, the organization will take strict measures against any trader found engaging in unethical practices such as price gouging or misleading promotions.

Abraham emphasized the importance of maintaining fairness during this holiday period, saying, “Let us work together to uphold fairness and ensure that the festive spirit is not marred by unethical practices.” In preparation for the Christmas season, FCCC teams have been proactive in carrying out inspections across the country. In November alone, over 700 inspections were conducted, leading to the identification of 44 potential violations. These included instances of overcharging and failure to display accurate pricing that reflects duty and VAT reductions.

To ensure traders comply with fair practices, the FCCC has already conducted 417 inspections in December. Enforcement actions will be determined based on the violations identified, which may include issuing warning letters, monitoring stores more closely, or prosecuting offenders.

In addition to enforcement efforts, Abraham highlighted the importance of kindness and community spirit during the festive season. He encouraged individuals to check on those who might be vulnerable, suggesting that even small gestures of kindness can significantly impact others’ lives.

As the festive season approaches, it is essential for both consumers and traders to adhere to ethical practices, fostering a sense of community and goodwill that aligns with the spirit of the holidays. This balanced approach not only protects consumers but also promotes a sense of togetherness and kindness in Fiji.
