The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations in Fiji has announced a temporary ban on the operation of Ferris wheels across the country until further notice. This decision comes in light of an investigation being conducted by the National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) following a recent accident involving a 12-seater Ferris wheel at the Wairiki Sevens tournament in Taveuni.

The Ministry confirmed that amusement rides were previously inspected by the NOHSS Inspectorate on December 7 and December 9, 2024, ensuring that all components were functioning correctly. A certificate for operation was issued on December 9, 2024. However, due to the incident, the Ministry is titling its focus towards a thorough investigation to determine the specifics surrounding the event.

In the meantime, a prohibition notice has been issued by NOHSS, halting all Ferris wheel operations. The Minister has engaged in extensive discussions with senior staff and concluded that a ban on all Ferris wheels should remain in effect until further assessment and investigation can ensure safety.

The NOHSS is set to provide a comprehensive report upon completion of the investigation, after which the Ministry will communicate the findings and any resulting actions.

This situation underscores the importance of safety measures in amusement rides, and the proactive steps underway reflect a commitment to ensuring public safety. Once the investigation is completed, it’s hopeful that it will lead to improved safety standards and renewed confidence in these attractions.

Summary: A ban on Ferris wheel operations in Fiji has been announced due to a current investigation into a recent accident. The Ministry of Employment emphasized safety and will provide updates following a thorough review. This move highlights the importance of public safety and may foster enhancements in safety standards for amusement rides moving forward.
