The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations in Fiji has announced a temporary ban on the operation of Ferris wheels throughout the country. This decision follows an investigation by the National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) into a recent accident involving a 12-seater Ferris wheel at the Wairiki Sevens tournament in Taveuni.
According to the Ministry, the NOHSS conducted inspections of amusement rides on December 7 and 9, 2024, ensuring that all components were in proper working condition. A certificate permitting the operation of the rides was issued on December 9. However, the Ministry is now prioritizing safety and has halted all Ferris wheel operations until further notice as they investigate the circumstances of the incident.
The Ministry has committed to a thorough examination of the accident based on the evidence collected. Once the investigation is complete, the NOHSS Team will release a full report, and the Ministry will provide an update on the findings. The decision to impose the ban on all Ferris wheels was made following extensive discussions by the Honourable Minister and senior Ministry staff.
This proactive approach to safety will hopefully prevent further incidents and ensure the protection of both operators and patrons at amusement parks and events across Fiji. It highlights the importance of rigorous safety standards and oversight in the amusement ride industry, fostering a safer environment for recreational activities.
In summary, the temporary ban on Ferris wheels in Fiji reflects the government’s commitment to public safety amid ongoing investigations into a recent accident, aiming to ensure that all amusement rides operate safely in the future.
