The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has praised the Government’s recent decision to prohibit the operation of Ferris wheels as a form of public amusement. This measure comes in response to a series of accidents that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries throughout Fiji.

Pravesh Sharma, the chair of the Commission, emphasized the need for all stakeholders, including the Government, to prioritize public safety and to ensure that entertainment providers adhere to the highest standards of accountability. He stated, “It is essential that relevant bodies carry out comprehensive investigations and implement strict safety measures across all entertainment events in the country.”

Sharma asserted that maintaining public safety should be a top priority to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Commission expressed its support for the victims and the families affected by the Ferris wheel accidents, calling on authorities to make the findings of the investigation into the tragic death of a young woman in 2023 public. Furthermore, he insisted that those responsible for the incident should face accountability, and that victim’s families deserve compensation.

This decision to ban Ferris wheels can be seen as a pivotal step towards ensuring safer public entertainment options in Fiji, and highlights the ongoing commitment to safeguarding community well-being. It reflects a proactive approach by the Government and relevant agencies to reduce risks and enhance accountability in recreational activities, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all citizens.
