The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has appointed Pranil Singh, who previously served as the General Manager of Regulations, as the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This appointment comes after the resignation of Joel Abraham, who has transitioned to a new role as the Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Regulatory Centre (APRC). Abraham’s tenure, which began in 2016, was marked by significant achievements in enhancing consumer protections and market regulations across Fiji.
Board Chair Cecil Browne expressed gratitude for Abraham’s leadership, highlighting his pivotal role in strengthening the FCCC’s consumer protection framework and fostering a competitive market environment. Abraham was instrumental in founding the Pacific Islands Network of Competition, Consumer Protection, and Economic Regulators (PINCCER), aimed at enhancing collaboration and regulatory standards across the Pacific region. His contributions were recognized widely, and he leaves behind a legacy of significant progress in the regulatory landscape.
In his new role, Singh is expected to maintain the FCCC’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and fostering a well-regulated marketplace. Browne noted that Singh’s appointment presents an opportunity for the FCCC to explore fresh ideas and perspectives, reinforcing its mission to create a balanced and thriving market ecosystem.
Singh’s extensive experience in the private sector, with over 30 years in various senior managerial roles, positions him well to lead the commission during this transitional period. He will oversee the FCCC until the board selects a permanent successor.
This leadership transition signals a hopeful future for both the FCCC and consumers in Fiji, with ongoing improvements expected in regulatory practices and consumer advocacy. The organization remains dedicated to enhancing its operations and commitment to consumer protections, paving the way for continued advancements in the regulatory environment.
