The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is ramping up its inspections once again as Mother’s Day approaches, reinforcing efforts to protect consumers from unfair trading practices during this peak shopping period. Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta emphasized the importance of holding traders accountable to prevent price hikes, misleading promotions, and violations of consumer protection laws.

In recent weeks, the FCCC teams have been actively monitoring retail and hospitality sectors, including businesses that sell flowers, perfumes, jewelry, clothing, and those offering restaurant and accommodation promotions. This follows a similar initiative during Easter, where the FCCC discovered 55 breaches after conducting over 1,100 inspections.

Jiuta reminds traders that promotional pricing must be transparent, visible, and consistent at the point of sale. Furthermore, she reiterates that all goods and services must meet acceptable quality standards, and consumers are entitled to redress under the FCCC Act 2010.

These ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to ensuring a fair marketplace where consumers can shop confidently without fearing exploitation. The FCCC encourages the public to report any violations they encounter, reinforcing the partnership between consumers and the Commission in maintaining market integrity.

As holidays prompt heightened consumer spending, the FCCC’s proactive approach signals hope for a shopping environment centered on fairness and transparency, ultimately fostering a sense of community and ethical business practices across Fiji.
