The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging traders to refrain from exploiting the festive season for profit. Joel Abraham, the FCCC’s chief executive, emphasized the organization’s commitment to combatting unethical practices such as price gouging and misleading promotions, especially during the holiday season.

Abraham stated, “Let us work together to uphold fairness and ensure that the festive spirit is not marred by unethical practices.” He revealed that in November alone, the FCCC conducted over 700 inspections across the country focusing on preventing deceptive practices. This effort led to the identification of 44 potential violations, which included issues such as overcharging, inadequate price displays, and failure to adjust prices in light of duty and VAT reductions.

To address these concerns, appropriate enforcement actions will be taken, which may include issuing warning letters, increased surveillance, or even prosecution. This December, the FCCC has already carried out 417 pre-Christmas inspections to ensure compliance among traders and foster fair practices during the holiday shopping season.

Abraham also reflected on the importance of kindness and community during the holidays. He encouraged individuals to check in on vulnerable members of the community—be it elderly neighbors, family, or anyone spending the holidays alone. He highlighted that small acts of kindness, such as sharing a meal or offering companionship, can significantly impact those who may be feeling isolated or less fortunate.

In summary, the FCCC is proactively ensuring that traders uphold ethical standards during the busy festive season while also encouraging community spirit and kindness. This approach promotes not only consumer protection but also highlights the importance of fostering compassion within communities during the holidays.

In a hopeful twist, this season can be an opportunity for everyone to not only shop responsibly but also to connect and bring joy to those around them, transforming the festive season into a period of generosity and goodwill.
