Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) is responding to the increasing demand for educational content by revamping its educational programming over the next few months. This development was announced by FBC Television Manager Sitiveni Halofaki following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Education.
According to Halofaki, the partnership, which spans three years, places the Ministry in charge of curating educational content for the programs, ensuring it aligns with their educational goals. “We recognize that FBC has played a significant role in education, particularly with national quiz programs, and we are eager to reintroduce the national quiz on both radio and television,” Halofaki commented. As a starting point, a spelling competition aimed at primary school students is planned for launch mid-year.
Permanent Secretary for Education, Ratu Meli Nacuva, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating that it would bolster their partnership with FBC, an organization that connects with a vast audience. The educational shows will be broadcasted on FBC channels, contributing to educational growth and greater community involvement.
This initiative echoes previous efforts in Fiji aimed at enhancing academic engagement, such as the IQ Active competition, which focuses on critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students. The mutual goal across these new and ongoing programs is to improve educational outcomes and better prepare students for the challenges of modern society.
This revival of educational programming aims not just to engage students, but also to involve parents in the educational journey, fostering a community-wide support system for learners. As these programs are set to be introduced, they promise to harness the power of media in promoting learning and development in Fiji.
