Tracey Ann Farrington has been honored as Designer of the Year at Fiji Fashion Week 2024, showcasing her unique blend of bold colors, sustainable practices, and mentorship in the fashion industry. Her journey into design started at the tender age of 10 when she began tie-dyeing singlets and selling them at her school, unknowingly paving the way for a successful career in fashion.

Farrington moved to Fiji 15 years ago, initially for love, but this transition turned out to be instrumental in her personal and creative development, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has become known for her vibrant color palettes and expressive textile prints, with a philosophy that embraces both creativity and market viability.

“My personality is a bit loud and bold—and so are my fabric designs,” Farrington remarked. Her commitment to sustainability is evident in her business practices as she prioritizes eco-friendly materials, focuses on upcycling, and creates timeless garments that resist the disposable fashion trend. “Fashion shouldn’t come at the expense of the planet,” she asserts.

Tracey is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of designers in Fiji, holding one-on-one sessions and planning workshops at Fiji Fashion Week. “It’s important the next generation feels supported and inspired,” she emphasized. Her design philosophy is built on resilience, kindness, and continuous learning.

Farrington envisions expanding her brand with a stronger emphasis on ethical fashion and longevity in design. Her advice to new designers is inspirational: “Follow your dreams, absorb knowledge like a sponge, and don’t fear starting small. Stay true to your vision—doors are just waiting to open.”

The excitement surrounding Fijian fashion has been amplified by events such as The Pacific Intruders showcase in Sydney, where other local designers are also gaining international recognition. This momentum reflects the collective potential of Fijian fashion to reach broader audiences and emphasizes the importance of supporting local talent. As Fiji continues to celebrate its vibrant fashion culture, the future looks promising for creators like Farrington and those she inspires.
